Students have been learning about the Age of Exploration since the beginning of the new year. They have read about different explorers, the tools they used, and the new foods they discovered, among other things. Students even used their imaginations and dove into the ocean to explore artifacts left behind on a sunken ship. They are currently writing a captain's log about their own journey to the Americas which may be displayed in the hallway for others to read. There will be a test on what they have learned on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

We're more than halfway through our unit on monarchies, democracies, and dictatorships. Every student has a packet and a study guide to help prepare for the quiz on Friday. Students have researched, read, and explored the subject through websites, textbooks, and videos. Now, they just need to review the information and show what they know. Once they have mastered the study guide, students will create a display of one type of government. You can find out more about that project here.

Multiple-tier timelines can be used to show relationships among events and places. So this week, students are creating timelines that compare their own lives to what has happened in history. Each student will choose a topic and create a multiple-tier timeline that includes a title, evenly spaced intervals, images, dates, and events. Some students will have their work displayed for others to see. Students will continue to work on their timeline in class and will turn in a finished project this Friday, September 8th.

Welcome to 5th grade Social Studies! Check back often to find out what we're doing in class. This week, we're getting to know each other, learning about classroom procedures, and preparing for the end of the school year. That's right—the end of the school year! Students will write letters to themselves, measure and record their height, and make predictions to include in their personal time capsule. On the last day of school, students can revisit their first day and see how much they have each grown, literally and figuratively.
